Another info packed essay. I can’t challenge your grasp of history as others have done, but you’ve painted a clear picture of both divisive and unifying forces. I think the MVP is the Christian religion, growing exponentially as it did and becoming major player in the power game. Thanks.
You seem to be on the side of, eg, the "barbarian" Huns, rather than the despotic Romans. But if you flip the angle, it seems you could argue that mass foreign immigration into the imperial core may be a factor in destroying an empire. Thus that immigration is a net cultural and economic negative for the majority of people living there, regardless of the political system?
I love this, thanks for the comment! I did list mass migrations as one of the causes of the decline of the empire in my previous post...but not from this angle. From the little I've read, it seemed to me, that it wasn't the influx of a lot of new people burdening the empire economically, but rather the maltreatment of the barbarians that led them to rebel and revolt that hurt the empire. This led me to believe that if the empire had handled how they assimilated them into the empire differently (treating them as true roman citizens rather than lower class?), maybe it wouldn't have been a negative thing, but could have been a positive thing. Thoughts? Do you think there could have been a way to handle the influx of people flooding into the empire that would have been beneficial to the empire...perhaps even strengthening it? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Thank you so much for your comment and insight. Everything I've read has mentioned a 'Byzantine Empire'. However, I'd like to learn more about your perspective. Do you have any books, articles, or other resources you could recommend? Thanks!
Thank you for all of this. I am a novice to studying history and learning as I go. So I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Your comments have challenged my assumptions and conjectures from my reading, which is always good in my book, helps me learn and grow. So thanks!
